About my organization

The mission of the Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center (SNBC) is to provide supports and opportunities that ensure the healthy development of children, youth, and adults in the Sunset District of San Francisco.  All of SNBC's programs and activities are of the highest quality and are offered free of charge.  Programs include: Daily afterschool programs for more than 750 elementary, middle, and high school youth in school- and community-based programs; daytime and evening technology classes in English and Cantonese; nightly adult and family enrichment and skill-based classes including ESL, art, dance, and parenting; digital media and arts programs for teens and young adults; and community-building events for the children and adults who live, work, and go to school in the Sunset District.

About the programs we offer

From its founding in 1996, SNBC has taught and promoted the use of technology by consistently and intentionally integrating the use of digital media into our programs.  SNBC believes that digital skills are not only incredibly valuable for individuals, but that they also help to build community and reduce isolation.

SNBC operates two Community Technology Centers (CTCs) in the Sunset District, one located in SNBC’s storefront community center and the other in A.P. Giannini Middle School. Youth and adults heavily use both CTCs for classes and open lab hours.  Classes include beginning and intermediate computing courses for English-speaking adults, courses tailored to teaching specialized design and processing programs, and beginning and intermediate computing courses taught in Cantonese.  SNBC's CTCs are also utilized by SNBC's afterschool project-based clubs for Flash animation, digital filmmaking, and creative writing, among other activities.
