Microsoft Word Beginner 1 (part 1 of 4)

MICROSOFT WORD

  • Open Microsoft Word, explain that the program can be opened through the Start Menu>All Programs>Microsoft Office (depending on the computer) or there may be an icon on the desktop.
  • Explain the screen to them: tool bars, scroll bars, change the view to Print Layout (if necessary) and compare what they see to a piece of paper in a typewriter. The flashing line is a cursor and needed in order to type anything.
  • Hand out Standard and Formatting Toolbar, explain that what the toolbars do can also be accomplished by using the menu at the top, the toolbars are like short cuts. Tell them to review these handouts and memorize and should be brought to future classes.

LESSON 1: BASIC FORMATTING

  • Type first and last name, highlight it (they may need extra time practicing how to highlight), moving from left to right on the Formatting Toolbar change it to Arial, 20 (size), bold, italic, underline and red.
  • Hit enter (explain that this is the only way to move the cursor down the page), type in the name of a family member. Make sure they capitalize the first letter of each name, (you may need to explain how to capitalize, many people rely on the Caps Lock key).
  • Highlight the second name, go to the Format>Font menu and change to Comic, 28 (size), blue, bold and small cap (explain the difference between small cap and all cap).
  • Highlight everything, change the alignment to centered, explain the difference between each.
  • Click on numbering and bullets, explain each.
  • Save as “WB1 Activity 1” in their folder on the server or on a disk. This may be their first time saving and this process can be confusing. Take extra time explaining how important it is to know where they save their files and what they call them.

IN CLASS ACTIVITY 1

  • Distribute WB1_Activity2_Handout.doc, they will be recreating this flyer.
  • Create a new word document by clicking on the icon in the toolbar.
  • Have them type everything on the page, hitting enter twice after “Birthday Party!”
  • Highlight everything and center it.
  • Highlight “Birthday Party!” go to Insert>Picture>Word Art. Choose a Word Art design, click OK. Change the font style to Arial Black and size to 60, click OK.
  • Highlight the rest of the document, go to Format>Font, change the font to Comic Sans, size 36, and give it a shadow, click OK.
  • Make sure your cursor is below the paragraph, go to Insert>Picture>From File, navigate to the file Lion.jpg
  • Save as “WB1 Activity 2” in their folder on the server or on a disk.

IN CLASS ACTIVITY 2

  • If there is time this can completed in class or have them start it, answer questions and they can complete it as homework
  • Distribute WB1_Activity3_Handout.doc
  • They’ll need to input the poem and format each line as notes on the handout.
  • Save as “WB1 Activity 3” in their folder on the server or on a disk.
