Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center Computer Help Day

Sep 19 2009 10:00 am

The Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center strives to increase technology
use by offering computer classes to youth and seniors. But many Sunset
residents may have non-working computer equipment and are not able to
access the Internet in their own homes.

At this event, volunteers will provide one session of free technical
support.  Volunteers will also provide one-on-one computer and
Internet tutoring.  Participants will register in advance for whatever
services they need.

Can you help Sunset residents get online?

Computer technical support may include:

1.   Hardware and software problem diagnosis

2.   Installing and demonstrating software updates and trouble-shooting hardware problems

3.   Installing and demonstrating anti-virus and privacy protection software

4.   Performing simple repairs to existing personal computer equipment.

Appointments are made prior to the event and provide more information about the types of problems you may need to solve.

You will need to bring items that would help in the repair of PC's. For example:
* tools such as screw drivers and needle nose pliers
* install CDs (OSes, virus scanners, etc)
* blank CDs
* spare computer parts (old HDs, power supplies, cables, etc)
* Anything else you might need

Cantonese bi-lingual preferred.

=============
One-on-One Tutoring Volunteer Job Description

You may not think you're a computer expert, but if you know your way around the Internet, email and Office productivity programs we could use your help!

At this event, volunteers will provide one-on-one computer and Internet tutoring to Cantonese-speaking seniors. After a brief
training session, you will work one-on-one with Sunset seniors and adults to demonstrate software and online resources that will help with their daily lives. Topics will be determined by the participants and their interests. Possible topics may include how to set up an email account, online GED or other classes, online translation services and useful health information websites.

No previous teaching or training experience necessary - just patience and enthusiasm.
