CTN Wins Grant to Help 3,000 Seniors in San Francisco
Last Tuesday, Mayor Newsom announced that the City and County of San Francisco received a $7.9 million grant from the Broadband Technology Opportunity Program (BTOP), a part of the federal economic recovery effort (ARRA). This grant will increase access to broadband and provide digital literacy classes in San Francisco’s most underserved communities. Community Technology Network is one of many community partners that will assist the city in these efforts. CTN will receive $300,000 over the next three years to help 3,000 seniors learn how to use the computer or improve their skills. Working with 26 senior centers, CTN staff and volunteers will teach basic skills, provide Internet security workshops, and much more.
The need for this type of programming cannot be dismissed. On average, only 36% of seniors are online. Together we hope to increase that number and make it possible for seniors to have the skills they need to communicate effectively online. Having access to the Internet and basic computer skills provides access to people and information in a way that can change lives.
